Soaking up in the sun, lazing on the white sand, and admiring the stunning view of Krabi are among the many reasons visitors flock to Phra Nang Beach. The Legend of Phra Nang Beach and Cave
The mystery and legend behind Phra Nang have been living with the local people for centuries. This belief about the story of the Princess Goddess remains strong among the local people.
Phra Nang Cave is a sacred place, and everyone visiting must treat this place with respect. Boatmen and fishermen offer incense and flowers to the symbolic Phallus of Shiva or also known as Palad Khik or Siwaleung in Thai. They believe that these offerings will ensure their safe travel and bring them good luck in their fishing.
Lingams or phallic symbols—associated with virility and fertility and known as the symbol of the Hindu God Silva—are prominent at the entrance. Palad Khik or Siwaleung is one of the most common objects of worship in Thailand. Some Thais believe that wearing them as an amulet, usually around their waist, will ward off illness and accidents and bring them good luck.
There are so many versions of the legend of Phra Nang. The famous one is that of an Indian princess who died in a shipwreck, but her ghost remains in the cave and never left. Another story tells that Phra Nang is the wife of a local fisherman. Her husband went out to the sea one night but never returned. Up to this day, it is believed that the woman lived and waited in the cave hoping for her husband to return home.
Railay Viewpoint
Another great adventure to do when visiting Phra Nang Beach is to take a trek up the Railay Viewpoint. Beginners must be cautious when hiking up to the viewpoint—it is short but a challenging trek. It is only a kilometer distance, but it is considered an intense climb. It is an inclined steep trail, and you only get to hold on to a rope to be able to reach the top. Remember to wear proper footwear when hiking the viewpoint. Yet, despite the struggles, you will be rewarded with a stunning view.
Getting to Phra Nang Beach and Cave
Phra Nang is reachable by a 15-minute long-tail boat ride from Ao Nang Beach to Railay Beach. The shrine, located at the Railay Beach East, is just a 10-minute walk from the beach.
